  9.     Take a moment to look around you.
  10. Yeah, right now! What do you see? What
  11. type on computer, monitor, disks, and
  12. the like?
  13.  
  14.     When I do that, I see stacks of
  15. disks for the 1541 and 1581 drives
  16. piled on the desk. A CMD hard drive
  17. and FD-2000. Old CD ROM for the CD ROM
  18. Commander. Books on things for and
  19. about the Commodore. Over 79 disk
  20. boxes cramed with disks. Some tapes
  21. for the datasettte. Even a few old
  22. cartidges of games. In fact that is
  23. from two locations:
  24.  
  25.     the system at the house,
  26.     a 128, and
  27.  
  28.     one in the shop, a 64c.
  29.  
  30.     Notice that I didn't mention any
  31. other type of computer? Good reason
  32. for that; I don't have any other
  33. computers. No wait, that isn't true. I
  34. have a Vic-20, C-16, Plus/4, Amiga
  35. 1200, a CD/TV and a SX-64, in storage.
  36. Even with those additions, you get the
  37. picture that I am not talking about
  38. the winbox.
  39.  
  40.     It isn't easy to stand up for what
  41. you like against the herd of sheep and
  42. lemmings. You know the type. The ones
  43. that have to have every new gadget
  44. that comes along.
  45.  
  46.     Yet here I am, using a 20+ year
  47. old computer and nothing else -- even
  48. with the flack from others and
  49. outright discriminatory acts. You may
  50. ask why am I not using what others
  51. use. Why stay with the Commodore? Not
  52. as a hobby computer or in retro
  53. emulation -- but as the prime/only
  54. computer.

  56.     That was the question that I was
  57. asked again recently, that prompted
  58. the idea for this report, as my
  59. reasons, likes and responses to others
  60. might be of some help to you, the
  61. reader, in your Commodore experiece.
  62.  
  63.     Hope that I am not the only one
  64. left in the world that only uses
  65. Commodore-Only. I know at least one
  66. member of the local users group that
  67. also only uses the Commodore.
  68.  
  69.     As to why? Multipart answer for
  70. this question. Generally I just reply
  71. with, "Why not?" letting the other
  72. start off the debate.
  73.  
  74.     Most often they say, "You can't go
  75. on the Internet." That brings up
  76. things like NovaTerm, Desterm, Cameron
  77. Kaiser's term program and of course
  78. Wave. I do it as a one two punch:
  79. before they can recover, I put in
  80. Contiki, an ethernet card and Retro
  81. Replay (both from Jens). Then I throw
  82. in, for good measure, the JOS and
  83. Wings programs.

  85.     Usually, they back pedal a bit,
  86. then go with the bit about not seeing
  87. the graphics. I counter that having no
  88. graphics only means I can go through
  89. the sites faster. Don't get the
  90. pop-ups and can download any picture
  91. that I want for later viewing.

  93.     Next, they will say that there is
  94. nothing on the net for the C=. We know
  95. that is false and only shows the lack
  96. of understanding and degree to which
  97. the speaker has been socially
  98. programmed.
  99.  
  100.     One thing they will state is that
  101. no one is making any thing for the C=.
  102. My response has changed to that one.
  103. Though I still ask them what bearing
  104. that has on the use of the computer, I
  105. follow that up with a list of things
  106. from Maurice Randall and Click Here
  107. Software. Bruce Thomas's Geos CD. Even
  108. though I am not a fan of it, the
  109. Commodore One. And of course LOADSTAR.

  111.     My debate attack then follows up
  112. with the simple fact that this
  113. computer is upgradable and about 100%
  114. backwards compatible for over 20
  115. years. Then I ask them point blank:
  116. "Can you  say the same for your
  117. platform?"
  118.  
  119.     At this point, they will either
  120. shake their heads in disbeliefe -- or
  121. shake hands with a special computer
  122. user.

  129. Ronin has made an excellent case for
  130. Commodore-Only computing. As Fender
  131. Tucker once wrote, "The Commodore is
  132. for those who are not so sure the
  133. computer revolution is a [good]
  134. thing."

  136. I have been working with the concept
  137. of "progress" recently, the foundation
  138. of all modernity. The questions I have
  139. to ask is, "Where does progress stop?"
  140. and "Is all progress really a [good]
  141. thing."

  143. Commodore people have an existential
  144. answer for these questions. Sever
  145. answers.
